Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
