From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric

Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While Trump's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.

“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure

However, a segment of conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.

But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.

“It’s quite ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Campaign Issues Response

Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.

Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted

However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that included little previously unseen information.
