The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.

Rai sank a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.

Final Round Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.

Play-Off Decider

This set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

Notable Performances

Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to do, finishing one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
