From Solo Parent Holiday Nightmare to House-Sitting Heaven: A Parent's Transformation

Following my relationship ended, I thought vacations as a solo mother could be easy. Quickly discovered they proved either outrageously costly, otherwise appeared exclusively designed for “traditional” families, or else were so cheap that I came back even more knackered than before I started.

Initial Holiday Attempts

My first attempt, camping with friends, was fine up until I had to pack up our shelter. Four hours of struggling with the tent in the heat later, I developed a dislike for the outdoors. Subsequently, an adventurous trip for solo-parent households. The abseiling and exploring caves were brilliant, but sleeping in a bunkbed ruined my spine. We tried a budget all-inclusive on the island, but the crowds of nuclear families were overwhelming, and pool-side chats with fellow ladies died down since I didn’t accompanied by a handy partner for their own husbands to chat with. An excursion to Majorca alongside a pal and her kids was brilliant, but the expense was staggering.

Discovering House-Sitting

Then, last autumn, a friend asked if we’d look after her pets within the county as she attended to a wedding. During a peaceful couple of days, we strolled on the beach, and settled near the fireplace at night. That led to house-sitting for her associate in Dorset, and it also went smoothly. Inspired, I paid an yearly £99 membership to join a pet-sitting platform, where, by caring for people’s animals, you stay in their homes free of charge. Within a few days, I’d arranged a ten-day pet-sit within the county, caring for a retriever named Buzz while the proprietors traveled overseas.

Each day's strolls provided the opportunity to discover stunning natural settings.

This marked the initial assignment for strangers, but any nerves dissipated as soon as we arrived the beautiful spacious house and encountered the gentle Buzz, who lived for belly scratches. Each day's canine strolls gave us the opportunity to venture into magnificent nature spots, and, once we returned home, we could unwind outdoors for meaningful conversations about our preferred “Ghosts” characters from the BBC sitcom. We avoided any expensive tourist traps to traipse through – rather, we perused bookshops, indulged to manicures, and went on kayak trips. I experienced more carefree and happier than ever for a long time, and could feel the connection alongside my child Polly strengthen daily. I’m not afraid to say that I wept with happiness. Things felt possible again.

Is Pet-Sitting for You?

Pet-sitting may not be for everyone. Certain individuals want no responsibilities on holiday other than choosing their upcoming beverage, are not fond of pets, or feel odd regarding sleeping in a someone else’s bedroom, clearing the dishwasher, and putting out their bins. But the gentle rhythm of ordinary living, with work stripped out and fresh locations to investigate, is perfect perfectly.

It keeps me from descending into complete idleness, which makes me feeling restless and strangely hollow. Moreover, monetarily, house-sitting is a life-saver for a solo mother. A 10-day break in a similar-sized property within the identical area we stayed could cost me back approximately £2,500 via rental platforms.

A New Outlook

Regarding residing in a another person’s house, I discovered it nourishing. Even though pet-sitting is a exchange, it is equally an act of faith between unfamiliar people and animals, that has unleashed the finest version of me – my calm, caring and measured aspect, full of gratitude for the individuals and locations we discover. I have scheduled an additional four days off, caring for a sighthound in leafy Surrey, and, in the coming year, I’d like to attempt pet-sitting abroad. Thanks to a touch of creative planning, we are able to experience the globe from the coziness of a home – it just happens to be someone else’s.
