A teenage youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly accused of taking the ashes of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

The young boy's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.

False Accusations Begin

The inquest learned how his mother got a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my apartment."

In a statement presented to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Investigation

An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was not stolen in the first place".

Media reports about the alleged taken ashes generated online responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".

The "social media content were really distressing", she stated.

Mental Wellbeing Impact

She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really were important to him.

"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".

Kai was arrested at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.

Police said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had not reached out to the family by the time of his death.

Isolation and Worry

His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".

When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he needed, but refuted removing anything.

Online Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.

The inquest heard that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.

She had no concerns on the evening before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".

She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".

He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".

School Reaction

The inquest heard from school personnel at the local High School.

On November 8th, she "overheard some students discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the first I learned".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.

After the discussion, the staff member said she called Kai's parents' telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.

The court learned his family said they never got that message.

Formal Finding

Lead coroner informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.

Delivering a descriptive finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.

"Likely untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.

"On 11 November, he was questioned by the authorities and after his questioning he was freed while inquiries proceeded."

The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his purpose."
