Thunder Begin Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to the Thunder in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the decisive points deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP scored 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, securing the champions a positive start.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Grit and defense," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."

Before the game, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their home court, while the squad were awarded their title rings.

Oklahoma City beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.

In other action, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
